Suffering from Too Much Screen Time?

We’ve all been there –working hard at the computer with a sore neck and shoulders, desperately trying to ignore our aching eyes. The use of computers, tablets, and smartphones is on the rise, along with complaints of digital eye strain

So, how can we manage our symptoms while keeping up with technology?

If you frequently spend more than 2 hours on a digital screen, you may experience discomfort in your eyes. This condition is referred to as digital eye strain. But, good news: symptoms of digital eye strain can be managed by following a few preventative measures outlined by your optometrist.

Glencoe Optometrists provides various treatment options to alleviate symptoms of digital eye strain. Contact us today for a solution to your irritated and weary eyes.

Irritating Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Close-up tasks like sewing or reading for extended periods can result in irritated eyes; the focusing muscles inside and around your eyes have become strained after working hard to keep what you’re looking at sharp and clear.

When you experience symptoms of eye strain after working on a digital screen for over 2 consecutive hours, it is referred to as digital eye strain (also known as computer vision syndrome).

Irritating symptoms of digital eye strain can include:

  • Burning eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Sore eyes
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Sore upper back and shoulders
  • Blurred vision
  • Focusing difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Watery eyes

Professional & Preventative Care

Digital eye strain is a manageable condition, and you can make a few changes to your lifestyle, home, and office to relieve discomfort.

Here are a few tips & tricks to help alleviate the irritating symptoms of digital eye strain:

  • Speak to us about computer glasses: Computer glasses are specially designed to help reduce glare and encourage focusing at an optimal distance.
  • Adjust your lighting: A soft light behind your monitor results in the eyes requiring less effort to focus. Try limiting harsh lighting and glare when using computers, tablets, or smartphones.
  • Keep your monitor at the ideal distance: Your monitor’s ideal resting point of accommodation is about 40-74 cm from the eyes. Maintaining the correct distance can help your eyes focus more easily.
  • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: About every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break by shifting your gaze to an object at least 20 feet away.
  • Keep up with routine eye examinations: Regularly scheduled eye examinations can benefit your overall eye health.

You deserve relief! If you try out a few of our tips and don’t notice any significant changes to your discomfort, contact Glencoe Optometrists for an eye examination.  We can help determine the cause of your symptoms, and provide appropriate management options.
