Irritating Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Close-up tasks like sewing or reading for extended periods can result in irritated eyes. These tasks can strain muscles inside and around your eyes after working hard to keep what you’re looking at sharp and clear. Spending extended time looking at screens can have the same effect.

Irritating symptoms of digital eye strain can include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Sore eyes
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Sore upper back and shoulders
  • Blurred vision
  • Focusing difficulties
  • Headaches

Tips and Tricks to Reduce Eye Strain

Digital eye strain is a manageable condition, and you can make a few changes to your lifestyle, home, and office to relieve discomfort.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help alleviate the irritating symptoms of digital eye strain:

  • Keep up with routine eye exams: Regularly scheduled eye exams help keep your prescription up-to-date, reducing eye strain and supporting your overall eye health.
  • Adjust your lighting: A soft light behind your monitor reduces strain on your eyes. Try limiting harsh lighting and glare when using computers, tablets, or smartphones, and avoid using devices in a dark room.
  • Keep your monitor at the ideal distance: Your monitor’s ideal resting point of accommodation is about 40–74 cm from the eyes. Maintaining the correct distance can help your eyes focus more easily.
  • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: About every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break by shifting your gaze to an object at least 20 feet away. This gives your eyes a chance to relax.
  • Remember to blink: Focusing on screens can make us blink less frequently. While using a computer or other device, remind yourself to blink whenever you remember.
  • Use computer glasses: Computer glasses are specially designed to help reduce glare and encourage focusing at an optimal distance. Speak to us about them during your next eye exam.
